What is GPT Image 1?

GPT Image 1 was OpenAI's first dedicated image generation model, released in March 2025. Unlike DALL·E, it was built on the GPT architecture, which gave it better text rendering, photorealistic output, and natural-language image editing. It supported text-to-image generation, mask editing (inpainting), transparent backgrounds, and multiple output formats. OpenAI shut the model down on October 23, 2026; its successors GPT Image 2 and GPT Image 2.5 cover the same tasks with better quality.

Model status: retired

OpenAI retired gpt-image-1 on October 23, 2026, and API requests for it no longer work. On imagesv2.ai the generator on this page runs GPT Image 2 instead; your credits and existing history are unaffected. GPT Image 1.5 is scheduled to shut down on December 1, 2026, so for new work use GPT Image 2 or GPT Image 2.5 Flare / Sunburst.
