When to rotate or straighten an image

Try it now
  • Fix a sideways phone photo

    Anyone sharing photos

A photo shows up on its side when you upload it to a website or open it on a computer.

The picture is saved upright, so it displays correctly everywhere.

  • Level a tilted horizon

    Travel and landscape photographers

The sea, a skyline or a table edge slopes a few degrees in an otherwise great shot.

A level horizon, with the empty corners cropped away.

  • Straighten a document photo

    Students and office workers

You photographed a receipt, a page or a whiteboard and it's slightly skewed.

The text lines run straight across the page, easier to read and print.

  • Angle a product or graphic on purpose

    Designers and online sellers

You want a product cut-out or sticker tilted a few degrees for a more dynamic layout.

A PNG with transparent corners that sits cleanly on any background.

What you get

In the example, a sideways phone photo of a window scene is turned upright.

Phones, scanners and cameras don't always get the orientation right. A photo taken while lying down comes out sideways, a document scan arrives upside down, and a quick snapshot of the sea has a horizon that slopes downhill.

Use the 90° buttons to turn the picture left or right (press twice for 180°). For a crooked photo, drag the straighten slider anywhere from −45° to 45° in 0.5° steps. Choose Crop to fill to trim the empty corners a small rotation creates, or keep the whole picture and let the corners be transparent (PNG and WebP) or white (JPG). Flip buttons are there too if you need them.

Photos open with their camera orientation already applied, and the result is saved at the original resolution as PNG, JPG or WebP. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I straighten a crooked photo?

Drag the straighten slider until a line that should be level, such as the horizon or a door frame, looks level. It moves in 0.5° steps between −45° and 45°.

What happens to the corners when I rotate by a few degrees?

A tilted rectangle leaves empty triangles at the corners. Crop to fill trims them by zooming in slightly. If you keep the whole picture, they become transparent in PNG and WebP, or white in JPG.

Does rotating an image reduce quality?

90° turns move pixels without resampling. Fine angles need resampling, which can soften the photo very slightly. The output keeps the original resolution either way.

Why is my photo sideways on some sites but not on my phone?

Phones often save the picture sideways with a tag saying how to turn it, and some sites ignore the tag. This tool applies that orientation and saves the pixels upright, so the image looks the same everywhere.

Can I rotate an image on my iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Open this page in your mobile browser, choose a photo from your gallery, rotate it, and save the result back to your device.
